Insulate It Solutions – Spray Foam Insulation
attic insulation is a popular product that can increase energy efficiency and improve comfort throughout your home. This type of insulation is made from polyurethane, which is a plastic that has been sprayed as a liquid and then expanded to fill spaces. It offers design creativity and flexibility, and it can fit hard-to-reach areas in addition to providing an airtight seal. It can also help to reduce noise transmission.

What is spray foam insulation made of?
Spray insulation is made of two liquid chemicals that undergo a chemical reaction to create the foam. The first is called the “A side” and the second is known as the “B side.” The “A side” is typically a blend of polyols, catalysts, blowing agents, and flame retardants, though each manufacturer has its own proprietary mix. The “B side” contains isocyanate and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, which are volatile organic compounds that off-gas as the foam expands.
This combination of liquid and gas creates tiny pockets that make it difficult for heat to transfer through them. It also creates an air-tight seal, which helps to stop cold and hot outside air from leaking into your home. Traditional fiberglass or cellulose insulation can’t do this, which is why they need to be rolled out and nailed in, while spray foam is sprayed in place.
Spray foam can be a more expensive option than fiberglass and cellulose, but it offers a much higher R-value, or resistance to heat flow. This increased insulating power can save you money on your energy bills year-round, as your furnace and AC won’t need to work as hard to keep your home comfortable.
